Generative AI stands out as a transformative technology that is reshaping the competitive landscape within the realm of image editing programs. In this article, we delve into a comprehensive analysis of two formidable competitors: Adobe Firefly’s “Generative Fill” and Dzine s “Insert.” These remarkable AI tools excel in local image content manipulation, offering advanced capabilities that elevate the standard of image editing.
Adobe Firefly “Generative Fill”
Generative Fill is the crown jewel of Adobe’s new AI initiative: Adobe Firefly. It enables you to add and remove content from images non-destructively using simple text prompts to achieve realistic results. It is integrated with Photoshop version 25.0 and beyond as a prime editing feature.
The tool provides a paint brush to allow the user to mask over an image region for generating a new object. It also has a text box for entering the prompt, i.e. the description of the object to be generated. The interface is pretty intuitive, see the image below.
Dzine is a newly released AI-native image editor that is currently in Beta. Different from other text-to-image services, it offers a familiar layer-based composition board that allows accurate image layout control. It also provides dozens of high quality image styles that can be applied to newly-generated images. It is an ideal tool for those want to leverage the power of GenAI, but at the same time wants a familiar, layer-based interface for controllability. It’s “Insert” feature has a very similar user interface to Adobe’s Generative Fill, see the image below.
Methodology
We chose 5 images to perform object insertion task using both tools. These images span a variety of styles, from realistic photographs to highly stylized drawings. For each case, we applied the same prompt and made sure the masks specified in both programs are as close as possible. Adobe Firefly returns 3 results in each generation session while Dzine generates 4, we chose the best one for each program by careful visual examination, and then compare the two best results side-by-side.
Case 1
In this case, we want to add a cruise ship into this beautiful scenery image. The result from Dzine looks natural, especially the reflection in water is well generated. The result from Firefly is a bit odd, the reflection is too sharp and unnatural. The lighting on the ship is somewhat wrong.
Winner: Dzine.
Case 2
In this case, we want to add a safety helmet to the man. While both programs were able to generate reasonable results, we felt that the result from Firefly is more like a standard safety helmet.
Winner: Adobe Firefly.
Case 3
In this case, we want to add a fancy red sport car onto the empty highway. The car generated by Dzine looks natural, it’s style matches well with the image, and the perspectives are right. On the other hand, the red car generated by Firefly has a strange Cartoon-ish looking, it doesn’t match well with the background.
Winner: Dzine.
Case 4
In this case, we want to add a pair of angel’s wings to the back of the girl. Both programs generated reasonable results, and picking out a better one is more like a personal aesthetic preferences.
Winner: tie.
Case 5
In our last test case, we decided to do something more difficult. Instead of generating one object, we specified three regions to generate three different objects: a hat, a flower, and an ice-cream. Dzine was able to generate the three objects successfully, and the hands holding the flower and ice-cream are particularly impressive. Adobe Firefly struggled to generate a correct hand holding the flower, and the connecting region between the hat and the head of the pig looks a bit fuzzy.
Winner: Dzine.
Conclusion
While both AI programs are capable of local image editing controlled by user prompts and handling images with different styles, we found that Dzine seems to have a stronger ability to generate objects that can seamlessly blend into the environments. Combined with other advanced features such as auto-prompting and structure-preserving image stylization, we believe Dzine is currently one of the best AI image editor on the market.
